17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoGreat views of Midtown and Downtown from the 17th Street bridge seem to be an opportunity for making use of the wide sidewalks to make a more inviting place to walk and visit. Trees could create a buffer from the traffic noise and heat of the summer.

17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoThis bridge should be turned into a thriving pedestrian area. Empty plazas next to fast moving traffic are bad urbanism. Eliminate two of the drive lanes and use that space to extend the sidewalks further in. Widen the bike lanes and demarcate the bus and bike lanes with flex-posts. Set up food stalls and pop-up retail on the north side of the bridge--people need a reason to walk/bike here! Add a bus stop on the bridge. Eliminate the on-ramps or make them single right-turn only lanes. Add green features similar to the 5th street bridge.

17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoSkyline views from 17th street bridge and large bridge size give an opportunity to make this area more inviting as a public space. Add some greenspace, trees, benches and activate the skyline view. Look to 5th street bridge or planned jackson street bridge pocket park for inspiration

26 17th St NE 2 years 5 months agoAs a cyclist, I don't want to spend any time on Peachtree if I don't have too. Need signs legally permitting cyclists traveling EB on 17th into Ansley Park. (its ridiculous that this is not permitted any vehicles but an exception should be made for cyclists).

Agree with the previous comment, through restriction should be lifted for cyclists traveling EB onto 17th Street for purposes of keeping those who bike or roll safe + providing a more direct connection to other key locations such as piedmont

I-75 2 years 5 months agoI suggest a two-way protected cycletrack on the north side of the bridge. This will eliminate conflicts with the ramps on the south side. As the current bus lanes are often illegally used by motorists, these should also be moved to the north side in the form of a bi-directional busway. The attached picture illustrates what I am describing (green line = bikeway, red lines = busway).

17th Street Bridge is literally wide enough to fit *everything* so at minimum a protected bike lane should be added on both sides. Given it's wide open, motorists are going 40+ mph, making it scary + uncomfortable for those who ride, esp people who are less experienced cyclists.

State St NW 2 years 5 months agoShould extend protected bike lanes to at least State Street given the connections people will often make to go southward towards Georgia Tech. Changes to the intersection can/should be made to allow for bike to safely turn left. Right now crossing the street into the turn lane is a non-starter for most people

24 17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoSeems like a missed opportunity with the new construction to create a buffered or protected bike lane on EB 17th between Spring and West Peachtree. The old lane was bad, now it doesn't really exist and drivers harass cyclists as the head up the hill towards W. Peachtree and Peachtree.

273 17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoBefore the construction started at the current Microsoft building, there was a bench at this bus stop. It was never replaced after construction. Seating is sorely needed. The other day I saw three people leaning against 3 different streetlight posts for lack of anywhere to sit.

17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoMove the pedestrian crossing to west-side of the crossing. Crossing in front of traffic taking right turns off the interstate is very dangerous. There's been many times where cars are coming off the off ramp at near highway speeds to take the right.

Implement sharper curbs so cars are forced to slow down and turn 90 degrees. Implement no right turn on red, pedestrian refuge islands and leading pedestrian intervals for safer crossing of 7 lanes of traffic

17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoBetween the bus and bike lane abruptly ending and the flood of cars turning right from the interstate without stopping, this intersection is dangerous for all modes of transportation. Force no turn on red here from the interstate, and add better signage/striping to indicate when cars can merge into the bus lane to make the upcoming right on Spring.

Is there a "No turn on red" here? The point is very true though... drivers are only looking to the left (so they can pull out into traffic) and never see walkers coming from the right. I've almost been hit multiple times because of this behavior

A two-way bikeway buffered by a bi-directional busway would occupy the northern half of 17th Street. These lanes could be extended west or their traffic shifted into existing lanes via queue-jump signals.

250 2 years 5 months agoSouthbound cars turning right often block the crosswalk, creating a dangerous situation. See attached photo from Google streetview, where an SUV with tinted windows has blocked the crosswalk while trying to turn right on red. This is very dangerous for pedestrians. This exit ramp should have a "no turn on red" designation that is enforced.

17th St NW 2 years 4 months agoInstall a barrier between the bus lane and the car lanes where the lane isn’t needed for right turns (e.g. basically the whole bridge). During peak hours the lanes back up with cars illegally using the bus lane, defeating the purpose. This would also give some protection for bicyclists.

17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoLanes are wider than necessary? (bus lane is like 14'?) -- if you went to best practice standards for city streets, could add a median to the middle and make the bridge safer from a transportation standpoint and less like a desolate parking lot.

17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoPlease just use the design guidance from NACTO's Urban Street Design Guide and it would fix most of the issues I see from a bicycle/pedestrian standpoint. 27 17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoThis is the eastern continuation of what I proposed for the bridge. Note that the two-way bikeway is buffered by a bi-directional busway on the northern lanes of 17th Street. This would ease flow between the Arts Center station and Atlantic Station.

If my light is green the cars coming off the highway turning right don’t bother stopping. Cars aren’t suppose to ride in the bus lane, I can’t cross over the bridge and merge right without slamming on breaks because a car is flying off the highway and turning right.

Market St NW 2 years 5 months agoLight timing on all of 17th is terrible, seemingly adjusted for rush hour volumes with no time-of-day or traffic sensor adjustment. This negatively impacts auto, cyclist and pedestrian travel (increasing driver frustration and, subsequent aggression). There are excessively long light phases with few to no cars to benefit from the long phases (e.g. left from 17th St WB onto Market St. SB). This is especially apparent at Market St and Atlantic Dr.

17th St NW 2 years 5 months agoThe bus lanes often have cars driving or parked in them. Wider white lines, repainting BUS ONLY markings, and ideally fully red painted bus lanes would deter this from happening and improve service for the Atlantic Station shuttle and MARTA buses.

Improved shade would be my #1 priority for walking across this bridge... This is what connects Midtown and Atlantic Station and walking across it in the Summer is an awful experience.

50 17th St NW 2 years 5 months agonoting that the pedestrian island here on the west side of the intersection should be replicated across all of the intersections on the corridor. The crossing distances are huge and also the way that many intersections are designed, allow for cars to accelerate to high speeds right at the point where they cross the crosswalk on left turns.

Market St NW 2 years 5 months agoThis intersection is massive and turning cars can hit 20-30 mph, right into the crosswalk. Extend the medians to allow for a pedestrian refuge in the middle and it would also help sharpen the vehicle turns so they can't reach such dangerous speeds.

State St NW 2 years 5 months agoThis intersection is terrible for pedestrians because (1) the crossing distances are very long and exposed to turning traffic and (2) the signal timing is such you have to wait forever. Recommend changing the crosswalks/extending the median so there is a place to wait. in the median for people trying to cross the street. and changing the signal timing to reduce the cycle length of the signal for pedestrians.

1350 Spring St NW 2 years 5 months agoCrossing 17th street at Spring as a pedestrian feels extremely dangerous. On the west side of the intersection, there are 7 lanes to cross. The corners have a wide radius, encouraging cars to speed while turning. It's a vast expanse of concrete that is not pleasant. I suggest "no turn on red" signs here, as cars turning right often pull up and completely block the sidewalk, and/or do a rolling stop.

Commerce St NW 2 years 5 months agoThis stretch of sidewalk was closed for upwards of two years for construction without providing an alternative path. I regularly saw people on foot making dangerous crossings or just walking in the street alongside the cars. It's hard to blame them, since getting to a safe route required walking quite far out of the way and making extra street crossings. This sidewalk is back open now, but future construction projects need to provide a safe and convenient path for pedestrians.
